Two pieces ostomy care systems

A Two-Piece Ostomy System consists of two separate components: a skin barrier (base plate) and a removable ostomy pouch. The pouch securely attaches to the base plate using a mechanical coupling or adhesive coupling, allowing the pouch to be changed without removing the skin barrier. This system offers flexibility, convenience, and enhanced protection for peristomal skin. 

Base Plate (Skin Barrier):

The base plate is a skin-friendly hydrocolloid adhesive barrier that adheres securely to the skin around the stoma. It protects the peristomal skin from stoma output while providing a secure foundation for pouch attachment. Available in flat or convex designs and in pre-cut or cut-to-fit options to accommodate different stoma types and sizes.

Ostomy Pouch:

The pouch is designed to collect stoma output and can be easily attached to or removed from the base plate without disturbing the skin barrier. Depending on the ostomy type, pouches are available as closed, drainable, or urostomy versions.

Instructions for Use:

1. Clean and dry the peristomal skin thoroughly.

2. Measure the stoma and trim the opening if using a cut-to-fit base plate.

3. Remove the release liner from the adhesive.

4. Center the opening over the stoma and apply the base plate firmly.

5. Press gently around the barrier for 30–60 seconds to ensure optimal adhesion.

6. Align the bag connection ring with the base plate flange, the ring lock must be locked if a click coupling device is used.

7. Press until the click is heard or felt, confirming that the pouch is securely locked in place.

8. Gently pull on the pouch to verify that the interlocking mechanism is fully engaged.

Precautions:

● Ensure the pouch is fully locked before use.

● Select the correct flange size for the pouch and base plate.

● Do not use if the coupling ring or adhesive barrier is damaged.

● Replace the base plate if adhesion becomes inadequate or leakage occurs.

● Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Clinical Consideration:

During the early postoperative period, the stoma and surrounding tissues are often swollen. Using a 70 mm skin barrier with a floating flange, when clinically appropriate, can make pouch attachment easier while minimizing pressure on the abdomen and improving patient comfort.

As postoperative edema subsides and the stoma size stabilizes, the stoma should be remeasured and the skin barrier changed to the most appropriate flange size to ensure an optimal fit, reliable leakage protection, and healthy peristomal skin.

Click Coupling System

Instructions for Use:

1. Align the pouch coupling ring with the base plate coupling ring.

2. Press firmly until an audible “click” is heard and felt.

3. Close the mechanical locking mechanism, if applicable.

4. Gently pull the pouch to ensure it is securely locked before use.

Interlocking Coupling System

Instructions for Use:

1. Align the male and female coupling rings of the pouch and base plate.

2. Press evenly around the entire coupling ring until the two components are fully interlocked.

3. Run your fingers around the coupling to ensure complete engagement.

4. Gently pull the pouch to verify that it is securely attached before use.
